What is Chinese rugs?

Chinese rugs-making is concentrated mainly in Peking, Shanghai, Tsingtao and Tientsin area. Chinese rugs come from factory like workshops with Senneh knots on strong cotton foundation. Chinese rugs usually have deep woolen pile. Chinese wool is very hard-wearing, therefore suitable for area rugs.

Most Chinese rugs are clipped in low relief. Rugs of this type are made in various colors, blue is the most common but rose, yellow, and beige are also used extensively. Often designs are constructed round a medallion. Most Chinese motifs are symbolic rather than decorative. A common motif which comes in form of a medallion or a border component is the Shou character, which symbolizes long life. The Fu character, which is less common, means good luck. Instead of the Fu character, bats are frequently used to symbolize good luck. The following are a few more common Chinese motifs and their meanings although many more exist

Chinese Peking rugs, also known as Beijing rugs, are a type of traditional Chinese rug that originated in the capital city of Beijing. They are typically made of wool or silk and feature intricate designs and patterns, often depicting nature scenes or Chinese cultural motifs.

Peking rugs are known for their fine craftsmanship and durability, and they have been produced in China for centuries. The rugs typically have a dense pile and a smooth, lustrous finish that is achieved through careful washing and finishing techniques.

In terms of design, Peking rugs often feature a central medallion surrounded by a border of intricate patterns and motifs. Some of the most common motifs include dragons, flowers, and birds, which are significant in Chinese culture.

Today, Peking rugs are highly prized by collectors and interior designers for their beauty, quality, and historical significance. They are often used as decorative pieces in homes and public spaces, and they can be a valuable addition to any collection of traditional Chinese art and antiques.
